    🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia🇦🇪 UAE🇪🇬 Egypt🇲🇦 Morocco🇯🇴 Jordan🇱🇧 Lebanon🇹🇳 Tunisia+ 15 more

Essential phrases, real pronunciations, and cultural tips to navigate 22 Arabic-speaking countries with confidence.

    Introduction

Arabic is spoken by over 420 million people across 22 countries, from Morocco on the Atlantic coast to Oman on the Arabian Sea. It’s the liturgical language of Islam and one of the six official UN languages — yet many travelers feel intimidated by its unfamiliar script and sounds. The truth is: a handful of phrases goes an extraordinarily long way. Arabic speakers genuinely light up when a foreigner attempts even basic greetings. In markets, restaurants, and desert camps alike, your effort is reciprocated with warmth, discounts, and an invitation for tea.

“Learn ten Arabic phrases and a door opens. Learn twenty and you’re practically family.”

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the formal written language used in news and official settings. Colloquial Arabic varies by country — Egyptian Arabic is the most widely understood thanks to Egyptian films and TV. This guide focuses on phrases that work across regions, with notes on key differences where they matter.

    Pronunciation Guide

    Key Sounds to Know

Arabic has a few sounds that don’t exist in English. These are the essential ones for a traveler — master these and the rest becomes much more natural.

    Sounds unique to Arabic

    خ

    kh
Like “ch” in Scottish “loch” — a raspy, throaty sound
    غ

    gh
Like a French “r” — a gargled sound from the back of the throat
    ع

    ‘
A constriction deep in the throat — like saying “ah” while tightening the throat
    ق

    q
“K” but made at the very back of the throat, not the front
    ح

    H
A strong “h” from deep in the throat — like breathing on cold glasses
    ء

    ‘
Glottal stop — the break between “uh-oh” in English

💡 Tip: Don’t stress about perfecting these sounds. Approximate them and context will carry you. Arabic speakers are endlessly patient with foreign learners.

    Numbers

    Numbers & Counting

Arabic numerals are actually the origin of Western “Arabic numerals” — but the shapes differ in Eastern Arabic. Most price tags in tourist areas show Western numerals (1, 2, 3) too.

    Country by Country

    Dialect Notes for Key Countries

MSA phrases work everywhere as a fallback, but knowing a few local words earns enormous goodwill.

    🇸🇦

    Gulf Arabic

    Saudi Arabia & Gulf

Very formal culture. “Ahlan” = hi. “Hala wallah” = wow/welcome. English widely used in cities. Conservative dress strictly required.

    🇦🇪

    Emirati / Gulf

    UAE & Dubai

English dominant in Dubai. “Yalla” (let’s go) used constantly. Emiratis are a minority — most residents are expats. Very open atmosphere.

    🇪🇬

    Egyptian Arabic

    Egypt

Most widely understood dialect (TV/film). “Eywa” = yes. “Izzayak?” = how are you? Egyptians are famously warm and will help endlessly.

    🇯🇴

    Levantine Arabic

    Jordan & Lebanon

“Shu” = what. “Kifak?” = how are you? Very cosmopolitan. Lebanon: French often mixed in. Petra and Wadi Rum guides speak excellent English.

    🇲🇦

    Darija (Moroccan)

    Morocco

Darija is very different — heavily mixed with French and Berber. “Labas?” = how are you? French works well in cities. “Walu” = nothing/no problem.

    🇹🇳

    Tunisian Arabic

    Tunisia

French very common. “Aslema” = hello. “Barsha” = a lot/very. One of the most liberal Arab countries — relaxed atmosphere for tourists.

    🇴🇲

    Omani Arabic

    Oman

Exceptionally friendly people. Closest dialect to MSA, easy to understand. “Hayyak” = welcome. Known for its safety and hospitality.

    🇮🇶

    Iraqi Arabic

    Iraq

“Shlonak?” = how are you? Kurdistan region increasingly popular for tourists. Baghdad’s hospitality is legendary among those who have visited.

    Cultural Etiquette

    Do’s & Don’ts Across the Arab World

    🤝

    Greet before anything else

Always greet before asking questions or making requests. Jumping straight to “where is…?” without a greeting is considered rude. A “marhaba” or “salam” first changes everything.

    ✋

    Right hand matters

Always use the right hand to eat, give or receive items, and greet. The left hand is considered unclean in Islamic culture. This applies even if you’re left-handed.

    👟

    Remove shoes when entering homes

Always remove shoes before entering a private home or mosque. Look for shoes at the entrance as a cue. When in doubt, ask: “Ashlaa’u al-ahdhiya?” (Shall I remove my shoes?)

    📸

    Always ask before photographing

Ask permission before photographing people, especially women in conservative regions. “Mumkin aakhud surak?” (May I take your photo?) is the right phrase. Accept “no” gracefully.

    ☕

    Never refuse tea

Being offered tea is a gesture of hospitality and friendship. Refusing is considered impolite. Even if you don’t like tea, accept a small cup and take tiny sips. You can decline a second cup.

    💪

    Patience is everything

“Inshallah” reflects a philosophical relationship with time. Things may run late, plans may change — frustration never helps. Accept delays with grace, and the experience will be richer.

(Koshari)

(Ful Medames)

    The Complete Travel Guide

    Egypt:
    Land of Pharaohs

Where 5,000 years of civilization meet the endless desert

Pyramids that dwarf imagination. Temples carved from living rock. A river that built the ancient world. Egypt is overwhelming in the best possible sense — a place where every stone has a story older than most civilizations.

    Updated October 2026 · 18 min read
    Introduction

Egypt is one of the most extraordinary destinations on earth — a country that simultaneously holds the world’s most recognizable monuments, a living Islamic architectural tradition, the world’s longest river, and desert landscapes of haunting beauty. Few places offer the same density of profundity. Standing at the foot of the Great Pyramid of Giza, you are facing a structure built 4,500 years ago that was the tallest man-made object on earth for nearly four millennia. The Valley of the Kings holds the tombs of pharaohs who ruled when most of Europe was still forest. Abu Simbel, carved from a cliff by Ramesses the Great, was relocated in its entirety in the 1960s to save it from rising floodwaters.

“Egypt is not a country with ancient history. Egypt is ancient history that still breathes.”

But Egypt is not only monuments. Cairo is one of the great megalopolises of the Islamic world, its skyline pricked by minarets, its alleys fragrant with shisha and spice. The Red Sea coast is world-class for diving and snorkeling. The Sinai Peninsula offers Bedouin culture and some of the most dramatic desert scenery on earth. This guide covers all of it.

    When to Visit

    Egypt Through the Seasons

Egypt’s climate is extreme — the heat is the dominant factor in planning your visit.

    ⭐ Best Season

    Oct – Nov

Ideal temperatures (20–28°C). Crowds haven’t peaked. Perfect for temple-hopping and desert excursions. Nile cruise season at its most pleasant.

    ⭐ Also Great

    Feb – Mar

Comfortable temperatures, lush Delta region, wildflowers in the desert. Spring before the heat arrives. Slightly more crowded than autumn.

    Peak Season

    Dec – Jan

Busy with European winter tourism. Cool in Cairo (10–18°C), warm in Luxor. Book everything well ahead. Red Sea resorts at full swing.

    Shoulder Season

    Apr – May

Getting hot (30–35°C). Khamsin sandstorms possible in April. Lower prices than peak season. Manageable if you plan carefully around midday heat.

    Avoid if possible

    Jun – Sep

Brutal heat (40–48°C in Upper Egypt). Only for die-hard visitors or Red Sea beach holidays. Indoor museums tolerable; outdoor sites punishing.

    Regions

    Where to Go in Egypt

Egypt’s key destinations are spread across a vast country. Most visitors focus on Cairo, Luxor, and one beach destination — this combination covers the essentials.

    Capital City

    Cairo & Giza

Egypt’s vast capital holds the Egyptian Museum (soon to be replaced by the Grand Egyptian Museum), the ancient Islamic district of Khan el-Khalili, and — just outside the city — the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Sphinx, and two companion pyramids. The Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza opened in phases from 2023, housing over 100,000 artifacts including the complete treasures of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Give Cairo at least 3 full days.

    Ancient Capital

    Luxor & Aswan

Upper Egypt is where the pharaohs are buried. Luxor was ancient Thebes — its East Bank holds the Karnak and Luxor temples, while the West Bank is entirely given over to tombs: the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut. Four hours south by train, Aswan is gentler and more Nubian, a gateway to the Lake Nasser temples including the magnificent Abu Simbel. Plan 3–4 days for Luxor, 2 for Aswan.

    Underwater Paradise

    The Red Sea Coast

Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh are Egypt’s beach resort capitals, with warm turquoise water and some of the world’s best coral reefs. Divers and snorkelers come specifically for the Red Sea — visibility up to 30 meters, year-round warm water (20–30°C), and extraordinary marine life including sharks, rays, and rainbow reef fish. Dahab on the Sinai coast is smaller, more bohemian, and home to the legendary Blue Hole dive site.

    Desert Oasis

    The Western Desert

Egypt’s least-visited region is arguably its most dramatic. The White Desert, with its surreal chalk formations rising from the sand, looks like the surface of another planet. The Siwa Oasis, 50 km from the Libyan border, is a world unto itself — mud-brick citadels, olive groves, salt lakes, and an oracle temple where Alexander the Great once sought divine confirmation of his rule. Best explored by 4WD with a local guide.

    Must-See Sights

    Egypt’s Greatest Wonders

These are the experiences that redefine your understanding of human ambition.

    • 01
      UNESCO World Heritage · Giza

      The Great Pyramid of Giza

The only surviving Wonder of the Ancient World. Built around 2560 BCE for Pharaoh Khufu, it contains an estimated 2.3 million stone blocks averaging 2.5 tonnes each. You can enter the King’s Chamber inside — claustrophobic but profound. Arrive at dawn to beat the crowds and the heat. Budget a full morning here.

    • 02
      Open-Air Temple · Karnak

      Karnak Temple Complex

The largest religious complex ever built. Karnak was under construction for over 1,500 years and covers 100 hectares — you could fit Notre-Dame Cathedral inside one of its halls. The Hypostyle Hall, with 134 columns up to 24 meters tall, is among the most awe-inspiring spaces humanity has ever created. The evening Sound and Light Show is spectacular.

    • 03
Royal Tombs · West Bank Luxor

      Valley of the Kings

63 royal tombs carved into the limestone cliffs across from Luxor, where pharaohs from the New Kingdom (1550–1069 BCE) were buried in hidden, booby-trapped chambers laden with treasure. Your ticket covers entry to three tombs; buy a separate ticket for Tutankhamun’s tomb (KV62), where Howard Carter found the intact burial in 1922. The painted walls are still vivid after 3,000 years.

    • 04
      Rock Temple · Lake Nasser

      Abu Simbel Temples

Ramesses II’s twin rock temples, carved directly from the sandstone cliff around 1264 BCE, are Egypt’s most dramatic monument outside Giza. Four colossal statues of Ramesses, each 20 meters tall, guard the entrance. In a feat of 20th-century engineering, the entire complex was dismantled and relocated 65 meters uphill in 1968 to save it from the Aswan High Dam floodwaters. Fly from Aswan (45 min) or join an overnight convoy.

    • 05
      Islamic Quarter · Cairo

      Khan el-Khalili & Islamic Cairo

Cairo’s medieval bazaar and the surrounding Islamic district form one of the most immersive urban experiences in the world. The souks sell everything from gold to spices to papyrus. The nearby Al-Azhar Mosque (972 CE) is among the world’s oldest universities. Lose yourself in the alleyways; eventually, stop for tea at El Fishawy café — in continuous operation since 1773.

    • 06
Nile Experience · Luxor to Aswan

      Nile River Cruise

A Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan — typically 3 or 4 nights on a traditional dahabiya sailboat or a larger motor cruiser — is one of the great travel experiences of the world. The itinerary passes the temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo, with stops for sunrise balloon flights over Luxor’s West Bank. The slow river journey matches the pace of the monuments perfectly.

    Sample Itinerary

    Food & Drink

    Egyptian Cuisine: Earthy, Fragrant, Filling

Egyptian food is one of the world’s oldest culinary traditions — some dishes on today’s menus have been prepared the same way since the time of the pharaohs.

    Koshari

Egypt’s national dish: a hearty mix of rice, lentils, macaroni, chickpeas, crispy fried onions, tomato sauce and a fiery chili sauce. Found at dedicated koshari shops — cheap, filling, and delicious.

    Ful Medames

Slow-cooked fava beans with olive oil, lemon, garlic and cumin. The breakfast of pharaohs — Egyptian street cooks have been preparing this since ancient times. Served with warm Egyptian flatbread (eish baladi) and sometimes a fried egg.

    Kofta & Kebab

Grilled minced meat (kofta) and marinated lamb or chicken kebabs, served with rice, salad and tahini. Street grills throughout Cairo and Luxor serve these from dawn to midnight. Eaten with freshly baked eish shamsi bread.

    Molokhia

A vivid green soup made from jute leaves, slow-cooked with chicken or rabbit broth, garlic and coriander. Egypt’s most distinctive traditional dish, eaten since the Pharaonic era. Served over rice or with bread.

    Egyptian Mezze

A spread of small dishes: hummus, baba ganoush (smoky eggplant), tahini, stuffed grape leaves (warak einab), pickled vegetables, and fresh salads. The best way to begin any proper Egyptian meal. Share as many dishes as you can.

    Hibiscus Tea (Karkade)

Egypt’s national drink: deep crimson hibiscus tea, drunk hot in winter and cold in summer. Sold everywhere from hotel rooftops to Nile felucca boats. Also try ahwa (strong Egyptian coffee with cardamom) and fresh sugarcane juice from street stalls.

The White Desert — Egypt’s other-worldly natural wonder
    Practical Information

Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

    Currency

Egyptian Pound (EGP). USD and EUR are widely accepted at major sites. ATMs available in cities. Exchange money at official bureaus — street rates are often unfavorable. Carry cash for markets and smaller restaurants.

    Visa

Most nationalities (including Korean) can obtain a visa on arrival at Cairo airport ($25 USD) or purchase an e-Visa online in advance (recommended — faster processing). Valid for 30 days, single entry.

    Safety

Egypt is generally safe for tourists at major sites. Petty hassle (touts, unsolicited guides) is the main annoyance — a firm, polite “la shukran” (no thank you) works. Check government travel advisories before Sinai travel. Avoid political gatherings.

    Dress Code

Egypt is a Muslim-majority country. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting mosques and religious sites (scarves provided at entrances). Loose, light-colored clothing is ideal in the heat. Swimwear only at beach resorts and hotel pools.

    Health

Drink only bottled water — even for brushing teeth in some areas. Apply sunscreen religiously (UV is extreme). Heat exhaustion is a real risk; stay hydrated, wear a hat, and rest midday. Hepatitis A vaccine recommended. Pack antidiarrheal medication.

    Tipping (Baksheesh)

Tipping culture (baksheesh) is universal and important — guards who open extra rooms, toilet attendants, hotel porters, felucca drivers, and restaurant staff all expect tips. Carry small EGP bills. Budget approximately 50–100 EGP per tip.

    Getting Around

Fly between Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Sharm el-Sheikh (EgyptAir, Nile Air). Overnight sleeper trains connect Cairo to Luxor and Aswan (recommended; book in advance). For local transport, use Uber in Cairo — it’s reliable and cheaper than taxis.

    Language

Arabic. English is widely spoken at tourist sites, hotels and restaurants. Learning a few Arabic words goes a long way: “Shukran” (thank you), “La shukran” (no thank you), “Bikam?” (how much?). Egyptians are exceptionally warm to visitors who try.

    🌅

    Start at Sunrise

At major sites, arriving at opening time (6–7 AM) means you have the pyramids or Valley of the Kings virtually to yourself for 1–2 hours. The light is also extraordinary at dawn.

    🎈

    Hot Air Balloon in Luxor

A dawn balloon flight over the West Bank of Luxor is one of Egypt’s most memorable experiences — the temples and tombs from 300 meters at sunrise is an image you’ll carry for life. Book through your hotel.

    🐫

    Negotiate Everything

Prices at souks, camel rides, felucca boats and taxis are negotiable. Always agree on the price before you get in, on, or start. Start at roughly 40% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Smile throughout.

    📷

    Photography Rules

Photography permits are sometimes extra at major sites. Flash photography is prohibited inside most tombs (it damages the pigments). Always ask permission before photographing local people — and offer a small tip if they agree.

    🕌

    Respect Ramadan

If visiting during Ramadan (dates vary each year), be respectful — don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight. Iftar (the sunset meal) is a special occasion to share if invited. Many sites have reduced hours.

    🔦

    Bring a Torch

Many tombs in the Valley of the Kings are dimly lit. A small flashlight or a phone with a good torch lets you see painted ceilings and hieroglyphs that most visitors miss entirely. A must-have item for serious tomb visitors.

(The Jordaan)

(Stroopwafel)

(Haring)

(Rijsttafel)

(Bruine Kroeg)

(Patat)

ATM(피나우토마텐)은 곳곳에 있습니다.

    The Complete Travel Guide

Everything You Need to Know About Amsterdam

Canals that glow at golden hour. Centuries of art stacked in a city small enough to walk across. Stroopwafels, brown cafés, and a bike culture that makes public transit look lazy. Here is how to do it right.

    Updated October 2026  ·  15 min read
    Introduction

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s most compact and walkable great cities. Built on 90 islands laced together by 1,500 bridges, the Dutch capital packs a staggering density of world-class museums, historic neighborhoods, and culinary culture into a space you can cross on a bicycle in 20 minutes. Nearly 18 million visitors arrive each year, yet the city manages to feel like a village — partly because most of it is low-rise, and partly because the famous canals slow everything down.

“The canals were built for trade. They stayed for beauty.”

What makes Amsterdam genuinely different is how the city lives in its own history. The gabled Golden Age canal houses — built between 1600 and 1750 at the peak of Dutch imperial wealth — are not museums; people live in them. The brown cafés (bruine kroegen) have been serving beer on the same dark wood benches for three centuries. The Rijksmuseum, home to Rembrandt and Vermeer, sits in a park where locals jog at dawn.

This guide covers everything from the best season to arrive to which neighborhood actually suits you, which museums deserve a full morning, and how to eat well without paying tourist prices.

    When to Visit

    Amsterdam Through the Seasons

The city is worth visiting year-round, but each season has a radically different character.

    ⭐ Peak Beauty

    Spring (March–May)

Keukenhof tulip fields explode into color. Canal-side trees blossom. King’s Day (April 27) turns the whole city orange. Crowds are manageable in March; April gets busy.

    ⭐ Best Weather

    Early Summer (June)

Long days, café terraces in full swing, outdoor festivals every weekend. Beat the July–August peak crowds by arriving in June. Temperature: 18–22°C.

    Peak Season

    High Summer (Jul–Aug)

Warmest temperatures but maximum crowds. Book everything 3+ months ahead. Canal boat trips are at their most festive. Amsterdam Pride (August) is spectacular.

    ⭐ Underrated

    Autumn (Sep–Nov)

Golden light on the canals, falling leaves, fewer tourists, lower prices. The museum season is at its richest. Expect some rain — pack a light waterproof.

    Quiet Season

    Winter (Dec–Feb)

Amsterdam Ice Village in December is magical. Sinterklaas parades in early December. Cheapest flights and hotels. Museums are blissfully uncrowded. Cold and wet, but manageable.

    Neighborhoods

Which Part of Amsterdam Is Right for You?

Amsterdam’s neighborhoods are small and distinct — understanding them before you book your accommodation changes everything.

    Historic Center

    Centrum & The Canal Ring

The Golden Age heart of the city, with the iconic concentric canals (Herengracht, Keizersgracht, Prinsengracht) lined by the gabled merchant houses that define Amsterdam’s silhouette. The Anne Frank House, Westerkerk, and the Nine Streets shopping district are all here. Central location makes everything walkable; prices and crowds are the trade-off.

    Arty & Local

    The Jordaan

Built in the 17th century for craftsmen and workers, the Jordaan is now Amsterdam’s most desirable address: narrow alleys, independent galleries, brown cafés older than most countries, and the city’s best Saturday markets. It rewards slow wandering. Stay here if you want to feel like a local rather than a tourist.

    Museums & Parks

    De Pijp & Museumkwartier

Home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Stedelijk (modern art), the Museumkwartier is Amsterdam’s cultural core. Next door, De Pijp is the city’s most multicultural neighborhood, with the daily Albert Cuypmarkt, outstanding Indonesian and Surinamese restaurants, and the Heineken Experience brewery museum.

    Off the Beaten Path

    Oost & De Plantage

East Amsterdam has been the city’s most exciting neighborhood for a decade: Oosterpark is lively year-round, the Tropenmuseum covers global culture, and the restaurant scene around Javastraat rivals anything in the center at a fraction of the price. The Artis Royal Zoo and Hortus Botanicus garden are peaceful alternatives to museum crowds.

The Prinsengracht at dusk — Amsterdam’s most photographed canal
    Must-See Sights

The Sights That Actually Deserve Your Time

Amsterdam has more museums per square kilometer than almost anywhere on earth. Here are the ones that will stay with you.

    • 01
      Art Museum · Museumkwartier

      Rijksmuseum

The national museum of the Netherlands is one of the greatest art museums in the world. Rembrandt’s Night Watch (1642) is here, and it is larger and more commanding in person than any reproduction suggests. Allow 3–4 hours minimum. Book tickets online at least two days ahead; walk-up queues in summer are brutal. The museum café is genuinely good.

    • 02
      Historical Site · Centrum

      Anne Frank House

The canal house where Anne Frank and her family hid from Nazi persecution between 1942 and 1944 is one of the most affecting historical sites in Europe. The house is preserved almost exactly as it was. Book tickets well in advance — months ahead in summer. The experience is quiet, somber, and important. No photographs inside.

    • 03
      Art Museum · Museumkwartier

      Van Gogh Museum

The world’s largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh — 200 paintings, 500 drawings, 700 letters — arranged chronologically to trace his artistic development from dark Dutch realism to the blazing color of Arles. Sunflowers, The Bedroom, Almond Blossom: the originals are here. Book ahead. Allow 2 hours.

    • 04
      Canal Experience · Centrum

      Canal Boat Tour

Seeing Amsterdam from the water is genuinely revelatory. The canal-house facades look completely different from below, and the light on the water at dusk is the city at its most beautiful. Skip the big open-top tourist boats in favor of a smaller private or semi-private canal cruise, or rent a small electric boat (no license needed) and navigate yourself.

    • 05
      Architecture · Centrum

      Westerkerk Tower Climb

The tallest tower in Amsterdam (85 meters) offers the best panorama of the city — canals, gabled rooflines, Vondelpark, and on clear days the flatlands stretching to the horizon. Rembrandt is buried in the church below. The climb is steep and narrow; the view is worth it. Small fee, no pre-booking needed.

    • 06
      Nature & Science · Oost

      Hortus Botanicus

One of the oldest botanical gardens in the world (1638), Hortus Botanicus is a quiet miracle of rare plants, heritage greenhouses, and a 300-year-old Eastern cape cycad that is the oldest potted plant on earth. A perfect antidote to museum overload. Allow 90 minutes. Lovely on a rainy morning.

    • 07
Tulip Season Only · Day Trip

      Keukenhof Gardens

Open only from late March to mid-May, Keukenhof is the world’s largest tulip garden — 800 varieties, 7 million bulbs, across 32 hectares 40 km southwest of Amsterdam. It is overwhelmingly, dizzyingly beautiful if you are there in April. Take the bus-and-entrance combination ticket from Amsterdam Centraal.

    Food & Drink

What to Eat and Where to Eat It

Dutch food has had a reputation problem, but Amsterdam’s restaurant scene tells a completely different story.

    Stroopwafels

Two thin waffle wafers sandwiching caramel syrup. Buy them fresh from the market (Albert Cuypmarkt or Noordermarkt) where they are made to order, still warm. The supermarket version is a poor substitute.

    Raw Herring (Haring)

The quintessential Dutch street food: salt-cured North Sea herring eaten whole with chopped onion and pickles. Buy it from a haringhandel (herring cart) at a harbor or market. Eaten traditionally by dangling it over your mouth — or the polite way, sliced on a small roll.

    Indonesian Rijsttafel

The Dutch colonial legacy left Amsterdam with the best Indonesian food outside Southeast Asia. A rijsttafel (“rice table”) is a ceremonial spread of 12–25 small dishes: satay, rendang, gado-gado, sambal. Blauw in the Jordaan and Tempo Doeloe are reliable choices.

    Dutch Cheese

Gouda and Edam are the famous names, but Amsterdam’s cheese shops stock hundreds of varieties from young and mild to aged and crystalline. Visit a specialist like De Kaaskamer in the Jordaan. Young Gouda on a Friday evening with a glass of jenever (Dutch gin) is an experience worth planning around.

    Brown Cafés

The bruine kroeg (brown café) is Amsterdam’s pub — dark wood walls, candlelit tables, and beer taps that have been pulling the same local ales for a century. Order a small glass of Heineken (vaasje) or a shot of jenever. Café Papeneiland (1642) and Café ‘t Smalle (1786) are the oldest and most atmospheric.

    Frites & Frituur

Dutch fries (patat) are thick-cut and cooked in beef tallow for maximum flavor, served in a paper cone with toppings: mayonnaise (the standard), peanut sauce and onion (oorlog), or ketchup. Vleminckx Sausmeesters and Manneken Pis are the legendary frituur stands.

    Getting Around

    How Amsterdam Moves

Amsterdam rewards visitors who leave the tourist bubble and move like the city moves — which is almost always by bicycle.

    🚲

    Bicycle

The dominant mode. Rent from Mac Bike or Swapfiets. Ride in the bike lane, not on the road or footpath. Amsterdam has 881,000 bikes for 900,000 people.

    🚃

    Tram

The GVB tram network covers the entire inner city. Get an OV-chipkaart (transit card) at Centraal Station. Lines 2, 11, and 12 are most useful for tourists.

    🚶

    Walking

The entire historic center fits inside a 3 km radius. The Jordaan to Museumkwartier is a 20-minute walk. Shoes that can handle cobblestones are essential.

    ⛵

    Canal Boat

The hop-on-hop-off canal bus stops at most major sights. For freedom, rent a small electric canal boat (sloep) — no license needed, fits 4–6 people.

    🚇

    Metro

Primarily useful for reaching neighborhoods beyond the ring (Amsterdam Noord, Amsterdam Oost). The Noord-Zuidlijn line connects Centraal to De Pijp.

    ✈️

    Schiphol Airport

One of Europe’s major hubs, 20 minutes from Centraal Station by direct Intercity train. Trains run every 10–15 minutes; no shuttle bus needed.

Renting a bike on your first morning is not a tourist activity — it is how you become, for a few days, actually part of Amsterdam.

Cycling in Amsterdam: The Unwritten Rules

Amsterdam’s cycling culture has unwritten rules that, if you break them, will get you glared at by a grandmother doing 25 km/h. Stay in the dedicated bike lane (the red-painted strip). Signal with your arm before turning. Do not ride on the footpath. Pedestrians watch for cars; they are not watching for bikes. Give way to trams. Lock your bike with two locks — theft is common. Never, under any circumstances, stop your bike in the middle of a bike lane to take a photograph.

Cycling along the Keizersgracht — the most natural way to move through the city
    Practical Information

Everything Else You Need to Know

    Currency

Euro (€). Cards accepted almost everywhere — the Netherlands is largely cashless. ATMs (pinautomaten) are plentiful. Avoid airport currency exchange booths.

    Language

Dutch. English is spoken fluently by virtually everyone in Amsterdam — it’s among the highest English proficiency levels in any non-English-speaking country. A simple “dank je wel” (thank you) is always appreciated.

    Safety

Amsterdam is one of Europe’s safest cities. Petty theft (pickpocketing, bicycle theft) is the main concern. Keep your bag in front of you in crowded areas. The Red Light District is safe to walk through; keep your phone in your pocket.

    Tipping

Not obligatory, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% for good service is appreciated. “Mag ik afrekenen?” means “Can I have the bill?” Service charges are sometimes included; check the menu.

    Hours

Most museums open 9–10 AM and close at 5–6 PM. Many have late-night Friday openings. Shops typically open 10 AM–6 PM (smaller shops sometimes close Monday morning). Sunday shopping hours are shorter.

    I amsterdam Card

The tourist card (24/48/72/96-hour options) includes free public transport and free entry to most major museums plus discounts at restaurants and attractions. Worth it if you plan to visit more than two museums in a day.

    Weather

Amsterdam’s climate is mild but changeable year-round. Pack a lightweight, packable waterproof jacket regardless of season. Rain rarely lasts all day. Temperatures: summer 18–25°C, winter 1–7°C. The city is flat and windy.

    Internet

Free Wi-Fi is available in most cafés, hotels, and museums. The OV-Fiets (public bicycle rental at train stations) requires a Dutch bank account or OV-chipkaart, so use regular bike rental shops instead.

    ⏰

    Book Museums Early

The Anne Frank House requires advance booking months ahead in summer. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum sell out days in advance. Book everything before you leave home.

    🧳

    Stay Outside the Center

Hotels in the Centrum are expensive and often noisy. The Jordaan, De Pijp, and Oud-West offer better value, quieter streets, and excellent transport links to the center.

    🌅

    Visit Sights Early

Arrive at the Rijksmuseum at opening time (9 AM) and you can stand in front of the Night Watch almost alone. The tourist crowds arrive by 10:30 AM and the experience changes completely.

    🏘️

    Explore on Foot

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) in the Jordaan is one of the best shopping areas in Europe. Wander without a plan; the small galleries, cheese shops, and bookshops reward discovery.

    💧

    Tap Water is Excellent

Amsterdam has some of the best tap water in Europe — bring a reusable bottle. Paying for bottled water is unnecessary and environmentally unfriendly for a city this ecologically conscious.

    🗓️

    Avoid National Holidays

King’s Day (April 27) is extraordinary but the city is extremely crowded. Dodenherdenking on May 4 is a solemn national remembrance and worth attending. Check the events calendar before booking.

“다음 역은 (Next station is)…”

Know Your Lines — The Tourist’s Cheat Sheet

Seoul has 23 lines in total, but as a tourist you’ll primarily use Lines 1–9, the AREX airport line, and GTX-A. Here’s what each one gets you.

    2
    Line 2 — The Green Loop ⭐
    MOST IMPORTANT FOR TOURISTS

Discount: ₩100 cheaper per ride than single-use tickets. Free transfers within 30 minutes.

Pro tip: iPhone and Samsung users can add T-money to Apple Pay / Samsung Pay — no physical card needed.
    Climate Card
    Tourist Pass — Heavy Users
Launched: January 2024. Tourist version updated for 2026.

    Price: ₩5,000 (1 day) / ₩10,000 (3 days) / ₩15,000 (7 days) + ₩3,000 card fee

Includes: Unlimited Seoul subway + city buses + Seoul Bike (Ddareungi)

Does NOT include: AREX Express Train to Incheon Airport

Where to buy: Station vending machines (not convenience stores). Foreign credit cards accepted since March 2026.

Worth it if: Staying 5+ days and riding transit 4+ times per day. Calculate: 5 days × 6 rides × ₩1,400 = ₩42,000 vs ₩15,000 for the weekly pass — huge saving.
⚠️ Important: No Tap-to-Pay at Gates

As of 2026, international contactless credit/debit cards do NOT work directly at subway turnstiles. You must use a T-Money card or Climate Card. Apple Pay and Samsung Pay work only if loaded with a Korean T-money card inside the wallet — not from a foreign bank card.

Single-Use Ticket — Last Resort Only

You can buy single-journey tickets from vending machines at every station. They cost ₩1,500 (₩100 more than T-money) and require a ₩500 refundable deposit dropped into a yellow refund machine at the exit. It’s a hassle. Buy a T-money card instead.

    Step-by-Step

How to Ride the Seoul Subway — From Entrance to Exit

The first time can feel daunting. Follow these 8 steps and you’ll look like a pro by your second ride.

    1
    Find the Entrance

Look for the subway entrance sign showing the line number and color. Most stations have 8–12 numbered exits — the entrance is usually marked separately. Major stations like Seoul Station have dozens of entrances scattered across city blocks.

    2
Plan Your Route Before Going Down

Open Naver Map or Kakao Metro and enter your destination. The app tells you exactly which line, which direction, which platform, and which exit number at your destination. Note this before you go underground — signal can drop in some older stations.

    3
    Tap In at the Turnstile

Hold your T-money card flat against the blue circular reader at the gate. Wait for the green arrow and a beep. The screen shows your remaining balance. Walk through. If you hear a different tone or see red, your balance is too low — reload at the machine nearby.

    4
    Find Your Platform

Follow signs for your line number (colored circles match your line color). Direction is indicated by the terminal station name — e.g., “toward Sindorim” or “toward Seongsu.” Platform signs and electronic boards show next trains in Korean and English.

    5
Wait on the Yellow Line Markings

Numbered queuing markers are painted on the platform at each door position. Stand in the line for the door you want. When the train arrives, step to the side to let passengers out first — this is a firm social rule, not just a suggestion.

    6
    Board and Watch the Screen

Inside the train, screens above the doors show the current station and next station in Korean, English, Chinese, and sometimes Japanese. Announcements play in all four languages. You’ll hear “다음 역은 (da-eum yeok-eun) — Next station is…” about 30 seconds before arrival — that’s your cue to prepare.

    7
    Transfer If Needed

Follow 환승 (hwanseung = transfer) signs and the colored floor arrows. Do NOT tap out when transferring — just walk to the next platform. Transfers are free as long as you don’t exit through the turnstile. Some transfers are a 30-second walk; some are a 5-minute underground hike.

    8
Tap Out and Choose the Right Exit

At your destination, tap your card on the reader at the exit turnstile. Choosing the right numbered exit is critical — exits at a major station can put you on completely opposite sides of a wide boulevard. Naver Map tells you the exit number — check before you go up the stairs.

💡 Best Pro Tip: Which Car to Board

The Subway Korea app (or Kakao Metro) tells you exactly which car number to board so you exit right in front of the transfer escalator or exit stairs at your destination. This saves 2–5 minutes per transfer. At busy stations, that adds up fast.

    Essential Apps

    Download These Before You Land

    🗺️
    Naver Map ⭐

Best overall navigation. Exact subway routes, real-time arrivals, exit numbers, walking directions. Works in English. Google Maps is unreliable in Korea — use this instead.

    🚇
    Subway Korea (Kakao)

Subway-only offline map. Shows which car to board for the fastest transfer — a genuine game-changer. Available in English and Japanese.

    🗺️
    KakaoMap

Equally good as Naver Map. Some travelers prefer the cleaner UI. Great for real-time bus and subway arrival info.

    🚕
    Kakao T

For when the subway is closed — the go-to taxi app in Seoul. Fully available in English. Book at midnight and get picked up in under 3 minutes in most areas.

⚠️ Do Not Rely on Google Maps

Due to South Korea’s national security regulations on mapping data, Google Maps cannot provide accurate walking or driving directions in Korea. It works as a basic fallback but misses exits, gives wrong directions, and doesn’t show real-time trains. Download Naver Map.

    Subway Etiquette

The Unwritten Rules — Follow These and Locals Will Respect You

Korean subway culture is built on quiet, mutual respect. These are not suggestions — they are observed strictly by every commuter.

    • 🔇
No loud talking or speakerphone callsKeep your voice low. Phone calls are kept to whispers or not taken at all. Music without earphones: never.
    • 🚫
Never sit in Priority Seats (노약자석)The pink/blue seats at each end of every car are reserved for elderly, pregnant, and disabled passengers. Even when the train is completely packed, Koreans leave these empty. Do the same.
    • 🎒
Wear your backpack in front during rush hourOn crowded trains (7:30–9:30 AM, 6–8 PM), wearing a backpack on your back takes up space and knocks into people. Put it on your front or hold it at your feet.
    • ↩️
Let passengers exit before you boardWait to the sides of the doors as the train arrives. Let everyone off first. Do not push in. Platform markings show where to queue — use them.
    • 🚶
Stand right on escalatorsSeoul is shifting away from “stand left, walk right” — the current norm is stand on the right, walk on the left if passing. Follow what people around you are doing.
    • 🍔
No eating on the trainEating on Seoul Metro trains is strongly discouraged, especially anything with a strong smell. Drinks in sealed containers are generally fine. Hot food is not.
    • 🤫
Keep kids calmSeoul trains are very quiet. Loud children draw stares. If your child is having a moment, step to the vestibule between cars — it’s slightly less formal.

    Pro Tips

9 Things That Will Save You Time, Money & Embarrassment

    🔢
    Use Station Numbers, Not Names

    Sinchon (239) ≠ Sincheon (213) ≠ Sinseol-dong (125). Names look similar. Numbers don’t lie.

    🚪
    Check Your Exit Number

Wrong exit at a major station = wrong side of a 6-lane road. Always confirm in Naver Map before coming up.

    💰
    Ride Before 6:30 AM

20% discount on fares before 6:30 AM. Great if you’re catching an early flight or hitting Gyeongbokgung before the crowds.

    ⏰
Avoid Line 2 & 9 in Rush Hour

7:30–9:30 AM and 6–8 PM. Line 2 at Gangnam Station during morning rush is a full-body contact sport. Plan around it.

    🌙
    Last Train is Around Midnight

Check Naver Map for the specific last train on your route. Missing it means a taxi — which surges between midnight and 4 AM.

    🧳
    Use Station Lockers

Major stations have coin lockers (T-money or card). Store your luggage and explore unencumbered on arrival or last day.

    🚇
    Board the Optimal Car

Subway Korea app shows which car to board for the fastest exit or transfer. Saves real minutes at busy hubs.

    ☀️
    Travel 10 AM – 4 PM

Midday trains on Lines 3, 6, 7, and 8 are often half-empty. The best sightseeing window is between rush hours.

    🅿️
    Don’t Forget to Tap Out

Failing to tap out twice triggers a 24-hour suspension on the Climate Card. On T-money, you get charged the maximum fare. Always tap out.

Myeongdong ·

Hongdae ·

Gangnam ·

Insadong ·

    Ikseon-dong ·

Bukchon Hanok Village ·

Itaewon ·

    🛍️ Shopping💄 K-Beauty🍢 Street Food🏨 First-Timers

    Myeongdong

Tourist Central, Shopping Paradise

Myeongdong is Seoul’s undisputed tourist capital — loud, crowded, neon-lit, and impossible not to love on your first visit. Every major K-beauty brand has a flagship store here: Innisfree, Laneige, The Face Shop, AmorePacific. Street food vendors line the main pedestrian road from afternoon until midnight, selling everything from giant Korean corn dogs to egg bread to skewered strawberries dipped in chocolate.

It’s unabashedly touristy — English is spoken everywhere, prices are slightly higher than other districts, and vendors can be aggressive. But the central location (a short walk from Gyeongbokgung Palace and Namsan) and sheer density of things to do make it the ideal base for first-time Seoul visitors.

🎯 Best ForFirst-time Seoul visitors · K-beauty shoppers · Street food lovers · Anyone who wants to walk everywhere
    Pros
    • Most central location in Seoul
    • English spoken everywhere
    • Endless shopping & street food
    • Close to palaces & Namsan Tower
    • Excellent transport connections
    Cons
    • Very crowded, always
    • Prices higher than elsewhere
    • Less authentic Korean experience
    • Aggressive street vendors
    • Feels more tourist bubble than Seoul
    🏯
    Gyeongbokgung Palace

15-min walk. Seoul’s grandest palace — arrive early and catch the Royal Guard ceremony.

    🗼
    N Seoul Tower

Cable car or hike up Namsan Mountain for panoramic city views — best at sunset.

    🛒
    Namdaemun Market

Korea’s largest traditional market — open from 5am. Wholesale prices on food, clothing, ginseng.

    💄
    Olive Young Flagship

The Myeongdong flagship is massive. Best selection of K-beauty products in the city.

“Myeongdong is Tourist Korea at its most concentrated. Don’t live here — but every first-time visitor should spend at least one evening walking its lights.”

    🎵 Nightlife🎨 Street Art☕ Cafés🎓 Young & Creative

    Hongdae

Seoul’s Creative & Nightlife Hub

Named after Hongik University (홍익대학교), Hongdae is Seoul’s creative soul — born from art school culture and still buzzing with indie music venues, street performers, concept cafés, and clubs that don’t get started until 2am. The energy here is unlike anything else in the city.

Over the years, chain stores have replaced some of the indie shops that defined Hongdae’s early character, but the neighborhood still delivers. The weekend street performances in front of the main exit are a Seoul institution. For quieter vibes with easy Hongdae access, the nearby sub-neighborhoods of Mangwon and Hapjeong offer a more local, residential feel.

    🎯 Best ForUnder-35 travelers · Nightlife seekers · Live music fans · Solo travelers · Budget-conscious visitors
    Pros
    • Best nightlife in Seoul, bar none
    • Young, electric atmosphere
    • Affordable food and drinks
    • Direct AREX line to airport
    • Great street food and cafés
    Cons
    • Very loud on weekends — sleep lightly
    • Crowded Friday & Saturday nights
    • Not ideal for families or older travelers
    • Original indie character has faded
    • Can feel chaotic
    🎭
    Hongdae Street Performances

Weekend busking at Exit 9 — singers, dancers, and full bands. Seoul’s best free show.

    🎨
    Trick Eye Museum

Interactive optical illusion art museum. Perfect for photos and a rainy afternoon.

    🏞️
    Mangwon Hangang Park

10-min walk. Riverside park where locals picnic, cycle, and watch sunsets over the Han.

    🛒
    Mangwon Market

The locals’ alternative to Gwangjang — less touristy, better street food variety, real prices.

“Stay here if you want to feel Seoul’s pulse — the cafés open at 11am and the clubs close at 6am, and both are genuinely excellent.”

    🎤 K-Pop💎 Luxury🏢 Modern Seoul📚 Starfield Library

    Gangnam

The Glamorous South of the Han

South of the Han River, Gangnam is the modern face of Seoul’s ambition — polished glass towers, flagship luxury boutiques, Michelin-starred restaurants, and the global home of K-pop. HYBE (BTS’s label) and SM Entertainment are both here, and the neighborhood draws devoted fans from every corner of the planet.

The Starfield Library inside COEX Mall — a jaw-dropping three-story wall of books — has become one of Seoul’s most photographed interior spaces. Lotte World Tower, at 555 meters, offers some of the most dramatic city views in Asia from its observation deck.

🎯 Best ForK-pop fans · Luxury travelers · Architecture lovers · Business travelers · Those wanting upscale Seoul
    Pros
    • Home of K-pop industry (HYBE, SM)
    • Lotte World Tower & COEX Starfield Library
    • Excellent upscale dining
    • Modern, polished, safe
    • Great subway connections
    Cons
    • Expensive — hotels and restaurants
    • Feels corporate, less “Seoul character”
    • Far from historic sights
    • Less interesting to walk
    🎤
    HYBE Insight

BTS’s label’s museum and fan experience. Book months in advance — sells out constantly.

    🏯 Traditional Culture🍵 Tea Houses🎭 Art Galleries🎁 Souvenirs

    Insadong

Seoul’s Traditional Arts Soul

Insadong is where old Seoul breathes — a winding street lined with traditional tea houses, folk art galleries, ceramic workshops, and calligraphy shops. It’s the place to find genuinely Korean souvenirs rather than mass-produced trinkets, and to rent a hanbok (traditional dress) for a walk to the nearby Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Ssamziegil, a circular open-air market tucked just off the main street, is a local favorite — small independent artists sell handmade jewelry, postcards, and clothing in a charming courtyard space. For tea, the wooden hanok teahouses are unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere in the world.

🎯 Best ForCulture seekers · Souvenir hunters · Tea lovers · Travelers wanting traditional atmosphere · Palace visitors
    Pros
    • Rich cultural and artistic atmosphere
    • Walkable, charming streets
    • Very close to Gyeongbokgung Palace
    • Best hanbok rental spots
    • Unique, authentic souvenirs
    Cons
    • Getting touristy — some areas commercialized
    • Closes early (most shops by 8–9pm)
    • Limited nightlife
    • Prices can be inflated for tourists

    🏯

“Walk Insadong slowly. Have one long tea. Buy one thing handmade. That’s the whole point of this neighborhood — and it’s the opposite of everything else in Seoul.”

    ☕ Café Culture🎨 Pop-Up Art👟 Streetwear📸 Instagram

    Seongsu-dong

Seoul’s Brooklyn Moment

Every travel guide calls Seongsu “the Brooklyn of Seoul” — and for once, the comparison earns its keep. A former industrial shoe-manufacturing district, Seongsu has been transformed into Seoul’s most aesthetically curated neighborhood, where warehouse shells now house concept cafés, high-design galleries, and pop-up brand experiences.

The café scene here is the best in the city — industrial-chic spaces, specialty roasters, and interiors that feel like they were designed by architects having fun. Pop-up shops change weekly; whatever’s trending in Korean youth culture is usually debuting in Seongsu first.

🎯 Best ForCafé lovers · Design and fashion enthusiasts · Photographers · Day trips from central Seoul · Trend-watchers
    Pros
    • Best café culture in Seoul
    • Incredible street style and fashion
    • Constantly changing pop-up scene
    • Easy Line 2 access from anywhere
    • Genuinely cool, not just hyped
    Cons
    • Best as day trip, not base
    • Limited hotel options
    • Pop-ups come and go — no guarantees
    • Less central than other neighborhoods
    ☕
    Daelim Changgo

Converted warehouse café and art space — the original Seongsu “it” spot. Still worth the visit.

    🎨
    House NoWhere

High-concept gallery with rotating exhibitions. The kind of art space that only Seoul produces right now.

    👟
    Seongsu Shoe Alleys

The neighborhood’s industrial past — artisan cobblers still operate alongside the designer cafés.

    🌿
    Seonyudo Park

Nearby island park — a former water treatment plant turned ecological sanctuary with river views.

“Seongsu is Seoul at its most now — take the green line over for a long afternoon of exceptional coffee and come back when a new pop-up has arrived.”

    06 / 08

    🏘️ Hanok Alleys☕ Boutique Cafés📸 Photography🍷 Cocktail Bars

    Ikseon-dong

The Hidden Hanok Maze

Ikseon-dong is Seoul’s most charming secret — and it’s becoming less of a secret by the year. A cluster of 1930s-era hanok houses crammed into a tight maze of alleys just south of Jongno, it was nearly demolished before young entrepreneurs moved in and converted the century-old buildings into boutique cafés, cocktail bars, vintage shops, and intimate restaurants.

Unlike the more famous Bukchon, Ikseon-dong is actively lived in and used — it buzzes with evening energy when local 20- and 30-somethings come for drinks in low-lit hanok cocktail bars. Evening is the best time to visit.

🎯 Best ForPhotographers · Romantics · Cocktail lovers · Travelers wanting traditional architecture without tourist crowds
    Pros
    • Most photogenic streets in Seoul
    • Authentic neighborhood feel
    • Beautiful hanok architecture
    • Excellent evening cocktail bars
    • Less crowded than Bukchon
    Cons
    • Small area — explored in 2 hours
    • Getting more popular (and crowded)
    • Limited daytime food options
    🍸
    Hanok Cocktail Bars

Low-lit bars inside 90-year-old wooden buildings. Traditional spirits meet modern cocktails.

    ☕
    Boutique Cafés

Each café in Ikseon-dong is unique — find the one with the courtyard and settle in.

    🛍️
    Vintage & Artisan Shops

Small-batch ceramics, vintage clothes, handmade jewelry — creative entrepreneurs at their best.

    🏛️
    Jongmyo Shrine

5-min walk. UNESCO heritage site — royal ancestral rituals still performed here. Deeply moving.

“Arrive at sunset. Get lost in the alleys. Find a hanok bar. Order something local. This is the Seoul that hasn’t been packaged for tourists yet — though it won’t stay that way long.”

    07 / 08

    🏘️ Hanok Village📸 Iconic Views🏯 Historic🌸 Cherry Blossoms

    Bukchon Hanok Village

Seoul’s Most Famous View

Bukchon’s famous hillside row of hanok rooftops — tiled grey against the backdrop of Bugaksan Mountain — is arguably the single most photographed view in all of Seoul. A living residential neighborhood of over 900 preserved traditional houses nestled between the two great palaces, Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung.

The key word is residential. Real families live here, and the neighborhood has posted signs asking visitors to be quiet, respectful, and not to linger in front of private homes. Come early morning or late afternoon — crowds thin, light is better, and the experience is far more moving.

    🎯 Best ForPhotographers · Architecture lovers · Morning walkers · Cherry blossom season · Palace day-trip add-on
    Pros
    • Most iconic Seoul skyline view
    • 900+ preserved traditional hanok
    • Between two major palaces
    • Free to explore
    • Stunning in cherry blossom season
    Cons
    • Very hilly — hard on knees
    • Very crowded (visiting hours 10–17h)
    • Must be respectful of residents
    • Not much to do beyond walking
    📸
    Bukchon 8 Scenic Spots

Follow the marked route past 8 viewpoints. Spot #2 gives the famous rooftop-row shot.

    🏯
    Changdeokgung Palace

UNESCO heritage site next door — the Secret Garden tour (book ahead) is unmissable.

    🏡
    Eunpyeong Hanok Village

A quieter, less-visited hanok village near Bukhansan Mountain. Worth the extra subway stop.

“Come at 8am on a weekday, when the morning light catches the rooftiles and the streets are nearly empty. That’s the Bukchon that earns its reputation.”

    🌍 International🍔 Global Food🏳️‍🌈 Inclusive🍺 Bars

    Itaewon

Seoul’s Most International Corner

Itaewon grew up around the US military base and evolved into Seoul’s most cosmopolitan district — where you can eat Lebanese, Ethiopian, Mexican, or French food on the same block, English is as common as Korean, and the neighborhood’s diversity is genuine rather than curated.

The 2022 crowd crush tragedy deeply affected the neighborhood, and some areas still feel different. But Itaewon has rebuilt and continues to evolve. Haebangchon (HBC) and Gyeongnidan-gil, nearby sub-neighborhoods, now lead the revival — indie restaurants and wine bars are thriving.

🎯 Best ForInternational travelers · LGBTQ+ visitors · Those missing global cuisines · Expats · Anyone wanting English-friendly bars
    Pros
    • Most international, English-friendly area
    • Incredible global food variety
    • Diverse, inclusive community
    • Great bars and nightlife
    • Gyeongnidan-gil indie restaurant scene
    Cons
    • Can feel less authentically Korean
    • Hilly terrain — tiring to walk
    • Some areas still recovering post-2022
    • Pricier international restaurants
    🍽️
    Gyeongnidan-gil

Itaewon’s revival epicenter — hill streets lined with indie restaurants, natural wine bars, and brunch spots.

    🏡
    Haebangchon (HBC)

Expat-heavy hillside neighborhood. Casual, international, and great for a relaxed evening out.

    Leeum Samsung Museum

World-class Korean and contemporary art museum — one of Seoul’s finest and most underrated.

“Itaewon isn’t the most Korean neighborhood in Seoul — but it might be the most human. Come for the food, stay for the conversations.”
